Stack review

The cross-border commerce stack, reviewed

Selling into three markets from one store is now a configuration rather than a rebuild. What the tooling does and what it still leaves you to decide.

Platforms covered

  • Shopify Markets · Shopify

More than 130 currencies, multi-language storefronts and duties at checkout from one store

  • Shopify Markets Pro · Shopify

Merchant-of-record route into more than 150 countries

  • Global-e · Global-e

Shopify's cross-border partner; passed US$2bn GMV in the June 2026 quarter

The market case

Cross-border e-commerce is growing about 25 per cent a year, roughly twice the domestic rate, and is projected to reach about 22 per cent of all e-commerce by 2027. Southeast Asia's cross-border market alone is estimated at US$50.37 billion in 2026. In Australia, online spend reached a record A$82.6 billion in 2025, up 14 per cent, with 24 per cent of all retail spend now online and A$18.9 billion going through pure online marketplaces.

What the tooling now covers

Shopify Markets sells internationally from a single store across more than 130 currencies, with multi-language storefronts and duties calculated at checkout. Markets Pro adds a merchant-of-record route into more than 150 countries, which moves tax registration and liability to Shopify. Global-e, Shopify's partner, cleared more than US$2 billion of gross merchandise value in the June 2026 quarter, its first time above that mark outside a peak quarter, and raised its full-year outlook.

What none of them decide is sequence. The tooling makes it technically possible to open three markets at once, which is precisely why the decision has to be made deliberately rather than by default. Opening simultaneously means 3 sets of acquisition assumptions tested at the same time with no control, and no way to tell which market's numbers are the anomaly.

One infrastructure, per-market measurement

The workable pattern is one integrated infrastructure with acquisition, conversion and retention tracked per market, so each launch is judged on its own numbers against the same instrumentation. That is a data pipeline requirement before it is a commerce requirement, which is why stage 6 depends on stage 3 having been done first.

One regional caveat before planning channels. TikTok Shop is live for domestic selling across Southeast Asia but not in Australia, so an Australian brand reaches those buyers cross-border, which changes the fees and the fulfilment path.

What we would pick

Shopify Markets for any brand already on Shopify opening a second or third market. It is a configuration rather than a migration, and it covers more than 130 currencies from the existing store.

Markets Pro where tax registration and liability in a new market would otherwise delay the launch by a quarter, which at a cross-border growth rate of about 25 per cent a year is usually the more expensive option.

Global-e at volume, where per-market merchandising and localised checkout justify a second layer. Below that it is overhead.
