SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb clickstream data puts the United States zero-click rate at 68.01 per cent across January to April 2026, up 7.56 points from 60.45 per cent in 2024. Put the other way, only 276 of every 1,000 searches now reach the open web.
The average hides the number that matters to a go-to-market plan. Transactional queries still send a click 69 per cent of the time and commercial investigation queries 54 per cent, while informational queries end without a click 74 per cent of the time. A content plan aimed at the top of the funnel is therefore competing for citation rather than for traffic, and one aimed at purchase intent is still competing for a click.
AI Overviews are the mechanism at the informational end. On queries that return one, the zero-click rate rises to 83 per cent and measured click-through falls by close to 60 per cent, which is why impressions, citations and brand demand have become the reportable measures rather than sessions alone.
