Each answer engine builds its citation set differently, and the measured overlap in top-cited sources across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews is only about 14 per cent. Ranking in one is close to no evidence of ranking in another, which makes answer-engine visibility a set of separate measurements rather than a single score.
Techniques aimed at generative engines are reported to lift visibility in AI-generated answers by up to 40 per cent, but the number to treat carefully is the baseline rather than the lift. With 68.01 per cent of United States searches ending without a click, a page's citation rate in each engine is closer to a primary acquisition metric than sessions are, and it has to be tracked per engine to mean anything.
