Stack review

The lifecycle automation stack, reviewed

Every major platform shipped an agent in early 2026. The pricing model, not the feature list, is what now separates them.

Platforms covered

  • Klaviyo · Klaviyo

From about US$20 a month; Marketing Agent (K:AI) available on all accounts including free

  • Customer.io · Customer.io

From about US$100 a month; transparent pricing and unlimited event tracking

  • Braze · Braze

Budgets start around US$60,000 a year; billed on data points

  • Iterable · Iterable

Typically US$30,000 to US$100,000 a year; Nova Agent shipped in 2026

  • ActiveCampaign · ActiveCampaign

Named among the agent-ready lifecycle platforms in 2026; entry pricing not compared here

Agents are now the baseline

In early 2026 every major customer engagement platform shipped an AI marketing agent. Braze launched BrazeAI Operator and an Agent Console, Iterable released Nova Agent, and Klaviyo introduced Composer alongside its Marketing Agent, known as K:AI, which is available on all accounts including the free tier and will analyse a site, build a plan, and launch flows and campaigns from it. The 2026 surveys of agent-ready lifecycle platforms list ActiveCampaign, Customer.io, HubSpot Breeze, Klaviyo and Braze together, which is 5 vendors offering broadly the same capability.

Message-level personalisation, autonomous journey optimisation and MCP server support have moved from differentiators to baseline expectations on enterprise tiers. That matters for selection because a feature comparison now returns near-identical answers across four vendors, which pushes the decision onto price model, data model and fit, where the 4 vendors with published entry pricing differ by a factor of about 250.

The pricing models diverge sharply

Entry price spans three orders of magnitude. Klaviyo starts at about US$20 a month for small lists, Customer.io at about US$100 a month, Iterable typically runs US$30,000 to US$100,000 a year, and Braze budgets start around US$60,000 a year.

The billing unit matters more than the entry price at any scale. Braze bills on data points, where every custom event, attribute or purchase written to a user profile is a billable unit, which couples cost to how richly the customer record is modelled. Customer.io bills without data point charges and allows unlimited event tracking at about US$100 a month. A team planning a detailed behavioural model should price both before committing, because the same journey design costs different amounts on each.

Fit follows the business, not the feature list

The 2026 comparisons place Klaviyo ahead on direct-to-consumer e-commerce, particularly on a Shopify store, and Customer.io ahead on a SaaS lifecycle journey with complex behavioural triggers. Braze is positioned for enterprise business-to-consumer brands with the volume to justify its floor.

The measurable case for doing any of this is specific. ICONIQ data has companies deploying AI agents for lifecycle email, ad copy generation and SEO content production reporting CAC payback three to five months shorter than non-adopters, against a market median of 16 months.

What we would pick

Shopify or direct-to-consumer commerce: Klaviyo, starting at about US$20 a month, with K:AI available even on the free tier so the agent capability can be tested before the list grows.

SaaS lifecycle with a rich behavioural model: Customer.io at about US$100 a month, mainly because unlimited event tracking without data point billing keeps the cost of modelling the customer properly from becoming the reason not to.

Braze and Iterable are correct at enterprise volume and hard to justify below it, given floors of roughly US$60,000 and US$30,000 a year.
